BETTER MADE SNACK FOODS!
The History
Although Cross and Peters company was founded on August 1st, 1930, the duo had actually been making chips for a few years before incorporating, selling them at fairs, outside theatres, in parks, and the like. At that time there were over 30 chipmakers in Detroit.
The company was named by using the first names of the founders, Peter Cipriano and Cross Moceri. Both men set a goal to make a better potato chip, hence the name: Better Made Potato Chips. In the years to come many chipmakers faded away while Better Made flourished! The company moved into its Gratiot location with all the big windows in the 1940’s. Many customers today still relay stories about visiting the Better Made factory with their parents and grandparents to watch the chips roll down the line, and sometimes being rewarded with a sleeve of the company’s famous “burnt chips” handed out by the owners themselves. (The chips are actually caramelized due to a higher sugar content potato!)
Better Made became not only a brand name, but a way of doing business. Even in the early days of the company, only the best ingredients and methods were used. At first, production was simple. Burlap bagged, select potatoes were cooked in the best oil available, weighed, and hand packed into crude, greaseless bags. Distribution was chiefly through the company’s own store outlets, which later grew into small delivery routes. Increasing sales made it possible for Better Made to expand their facility several times.
The Process
Today, Better Made uses 60 million pounds of potatoes every year – grown right here in Michigan for ten months of the year – and the entire process is a little more complex. The potatoes are bulk purchased and unloaded from delivery trucks, transported by conveyors to storage bins, and as needed, they are conveyed automatically to the fryers where they are washed, peeled, sliced, and inspected. The potato slices are conveyed to temperature-controlled cookers where only 100% cottonseed oil is used. The cooked chips are then lightly salted and automatically advanced by a conveyor system to automatic packaging machines that weigh, form, fill, and seal the finished bags.
Commitment To Quality
Better Made Potato Chips uses all natural resources and are untouched by human hands from the time the potatoes leave the farm until you bring the crunchy chips to your mouth. When you add Better Made’s line of best-selling seasoned potato chips such as Bar-B-Q, Red Hot, Sour Cream and Onion, Salt and Vinegar, and Sweet Bar-B-Q, you have the best line-up of snacks for any occasion.
